More details | Cliff Nicholls has been the convenor of the European task group for asphalt test methods for fifteen years. During that time, he has developed an understanding of what can be asked of asphalt and the limitations of the available test methods. Since his retirement from TRL Limited at the end of 2015, he has put his ideas into a book that is due to be published on the day of the presentation (www.crcpress.com/Asphalt-Mixture-Specification- and-Testing/Nicholls/p/book/9781498764056). The presentation will cover the specification level of test methods (fundamental, simulative, surrogate and recipe; on the asphalt or on its components) for the range of properties that can be specified (composition, volumetrics, temperature, profile, skid resistance, noise and spray reduction, colour, deformation resistance, resistance to cracking, resistance to aggregate loss, stiffness, resistance to fatigue, moisture damage, resistance to chemicals, (im)permeability, ageing potential and inter-layer bond not forgetting the sustainability aspects of durability, recycling, secondary aggregates carbon emissions and lower temperature asphalt). However, the ability to specify all such properties needs to be tempered with the realisation that the highest levels of some of these properties are mutually exclusive and that every property added to the list of requirements reduces the number of mixtures that can meet them all and, possibly more importantly, increases the cost of the asphalt. |
