The waste management of coal tar impacted bitumen, recycling of asphalt and assessing pavement ageing is driven by chemical analysis. This presentation provides an insight into how coal tar is detected and how bitumen degradation can be assessed using the latest generation chemical analyser that can be used in a laboratory or in a van on the side of the road.

The use of onsite analysis to give real time data where waste is being produced gives significant time and cost saving benefits. The QED analyser can identify coal tar even when mixed with bitumen and give confidence that road binder is being correctly characterised for waste acceptance purposes. The QED also assesses bitumen degradation, providing insights into the suitability of any recovered asphalt used for recycling. By understanding how degraded the bitumen in existing pavement has become, highways owners can decide if repair, surface dressing or replacement is the most economical option.
