This is a brand new method for determining the condition of the surface of asphalt roads. It is a Highways England project which was first considered in 2012. The project looks at the chemical changes of bitumen as it ages in a road surface. It loses its adhesion to the aggregate, which of course leads to surfaces breaking up. Particularly for thin surface materials, which rely on the binder to do a lot of the work to keep the material together. The aim is to offer a prediction as to when surfaces are going to fail. |
